Pedal like a butterfly, sting like a Yeti.

It seems that industry publications and tradeshow buzz has been all about huge enduro sleds with plus-sized tires and slacked-out geometries of late, but the SB4.5 Carbon GX Eagle Complete Mountain Bike proves that even flow-centric brands like Yeti Cycles are still into the trail scene. It's a moderately slack 29er with 4.5in of travel that's designed for stability and speed on descents with plenty of snap on climbs for cyclists who still earn their laps the old-fashioned way.

Though it was created to fill the trail niche in Yeti's line, the SB4.5 has a noticeable focus on losing weight, which combines with the wagon wheels to keep it versatile enough for straight-up XC riding. The carbon fiber frame is stiff and light, with a relaxed 67.5-degree head tube angle and stability-enhancing 17.2in chainstays that don't get in the way on climbs. The FOX Performance 34 fork also provides confidence on descents with 140mm of plush, forgiving travel that gives you the option to pick a line when you feel like it and just point the bike downhill when you don't. Yeti uses its relatively new Switch Infinity suspension in the SB4.5, which keeps the pedal stroke consistent and reduces squat by using a pivot system that switches direction as you move through the bike's travel.

Yeti's inclusion of Boost axles also contributes to the SB4.5's stiff, efficient pedaling platform, and the departure from the 142mm rear standard allows for more space between the hubs for better tire clearance and shorter chainstays—dimensions that are especially relevant for 29ers. With a greater hub distance, you also get a better spoke bracing angle, which creates a stiffer wheel and chassis platform. Finally, the hub's bearings themselves will experience less damaging torsional forces with the wider footprint, prolonging their lifespan and leading to a more efficient rear triangle as a whole. This stiffness and Switch Infinity's pedal-ability are what make the SB4.5 more adept at climbing than you'd expect, aptly demonstrating Yeti's reluctance to allow its bikes to fall too neatly into one category alone.

While Yeti's Shimano builds tend to feature Race Face cranks, this build takes full advantage of SRAM's Eagle gearing. The 30t chainring and comically huge 10 - 50t spread out back ensure you'll almost never find yourself without a gear whether you're burning up hardpack or laboring up a punishing grade. Either way, the finishing touch of a FOX Transfer dropper post ensures that you'll never be more than a switch throw away from keeping your saddle at the right height.

    • A 29er that pedals like a trail bike but drops in like a Yeti
    • 4.5in of Yeti's premier Switch Infinity devours big hits
    • Trail bike geometry remains stable across the funky stuff
    • Stubby stays keep 29er handling sharp
    • Stiff, light carbon frame brooks no nonsense on climbs
    • Massive BB shell and Boost spacing maintain stiff pedaling
    • Dropper post keeps your perch at the right height
    • SRAM Eagle gearing covers every gradient, up or down

    SB4.5 a-go-go

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Shopping for a new mid-travel MB can get somewhat confusing and exhausting. Reviews, reviews and more reviews. What one person likes another dislikes. How can one make an intelligent decision? Buy this bike! The Yeti SB4.5 is the real deal my MTB friends. Only one impartial online review and that guy was an idiot. I was considering the 2019 SB 130 and really liked the reviews on it as well, but the 2018 had so many good reviews that I decided to save $1500 and purchase it. Very happy I made the decision. My previous bike is a Specialized Epic Expert 29er and it was by far the best and fastest bike I have ever ridden, but it was starting to hurt my back after long rides. Aging sucks! Anyhow, this bike rides better than my Epic, faster than my epic, climbs better than my epic and my back feels great after hours of riding. The only component I would knock on this model are the wheels. I upgraded to DT Swiss M1700 with a 54 ratchet and this bike handles perfectly. Competitive Cyclist was awesome to deal with too. Best price, excellent service and communication. One of the best bike buying experiences ever.....
