    Defies physics.

Tell your astrophysicist and sci-fi friends that Patagonia found out what's in a black hole, or at least the Black Hole 60L Duffel Bag: your climbing, hiking, and traveling gear from your last five-day trip. Inspired by rugged-yet-light alpine packs, the Black Hole features a burly ripstop fabric filmed in a TPU laminate and coated with DWR for the ultimate in outdoors protection. The padded base protects your gear throughout the trip, and Patagonia padded the removable shoulder strap and removable backpack straps for comfort. Internal organizers and zippered mesh pockets organize all the small things, while the external side pocket stows the duffel for compact storage. Compression straps prevent your gear from bouncing around whether you're traveling via airplane or four-wheeler.

    Perfect for long weekends

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I’ve used this black hole duffel a number of times on weekend trips. I really like the ripstop fabric, it can take a beating and also repel water. It will be one of my go to bags to pack gear for my pack in elk hunt this September.

    Patagonia rockin their duffel game

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Im a huge fan of the black holes. Ive had the 90L for a couple years and had to snag a 60L for smaller trips. The 60L is great for 1-2 day trips. I find I can fit a surprising amount of stuff in these. And I love their water resistant outer material. Keep water, dirt, and sand out really well.

    Love it

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is my go-to bag for everything. Long weekends allow me to throw all of my bike gear in here easy, toss it in the truck and go! longer vacations this carries all the gear you need, and some internal zippered pockets help keep gear organized. The straps are easy to remove so you can keep them if you like the backpack carry, or remove them if you want to clean up the outside of the bag. It holds all my ski gear in winter, bike gear in summer, it is the perfect go bag for your next adventure!

    Durable, Reliable Duffel!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Used this for a great trip up the California coast! This bag was great in terms of size, functionality, organization and overall ease of use. I never had to attach the backpack straps, but they seemed easy to use, and definitely seem like they give an edge to a pretty standard duffel. I loved how the bag is self contained, and packs into itself. Making long term storage a breeze!

You absolutely CAN carry it on!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Facing a 4 day business trip and having to carry more business paperwork and clothes than expected, I bought one of these on a moment's notice from another e-tailer with a store nearby, since Backcountry's logistics couldn't get it to me over the weekend.
I am just back from that 4 day trip and can absolutely vouch for the fact that, stuffed to the gills with 2 big looseleaf notebooks and 4 days of clothes, plus a toiletry kit, plus my laptop, the Black Hole 60L Duffel fit in the overheads of two United domestic flights with more than a couple of inches to spare.
I dragged it on the floor through O'Hare and once I got home, simply washed off the bottom and it looks brand new.

    Use It Everyday!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

There is space for all my gear! It has side straps you can Velcro together. I find myself attaching things on the side with my carabineers. The side zipper pocket is HUGE! That way I can put many/big things in it (for a side pocket). I love the two side straps. So it’s easy to pick it up and place it on the bed or where ever. What I love the most, the removable backpack straps. Sometimes it’s hard to carry a duffel. Throw it on the back and it dissipates the weight making it seem lighter. Plus I have an extra hand to hold my drink or carry about bag. Some have wheels. This bag is amazing.

    5 stars

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I’ve been eyeing this bag as a couple of friends have it and I finally took the plunge and bought it and I couldn’t be more pleased. It’ll fit ski boots and ski clothing, though I vacuum pack my clothing to save space. It will fit under the seat on an airplane if you don’t pack it fully. I have a duffel that’s a similar size and this thing really is a black hole - it’s amazing how much more I can fit in this vs the duffel.

    Didna??t receive what I ordered

The wrong bag was sent and we dona??t have time to wait for a replacement as ita??s needed for a sport. Received the all black bag instead of the one that was ordered with the fish. Overall the bag is nice but definitely a disappointment when you pay so much and expect a particular style (son picked it out for a gift) and it was messed up.

      Didna??t receive what I ordered

Your review seems to be customer service related. Not sure how this reflects on your satisfaction of the product.

Have you contacted Backcountry about the error? I've had nothing if not stellar customer service experiences with them, I'm sure they would work with you to get you what you ordered.

      Awesome travel bag!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I got this duffel to take on a long trip I have coming up and am super excited to use it for that, but I have also taken it on a few shorter weekend trips already and I love it! It is the perfect size to fit in an overhead bin of an airplane, or stuff nicely in the back of a small car trunk for travel. Another huge plus is how durable and waterproof this bag is. It fits everything I could need to a few days or a few weeks. I can't wait to continue using it for my future trips!

Bag for any type of weekend travel!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Used this duffel for a weekend ski trip and it was perfect. The 60L provided plenty of room for all my essentials. Love the straps that allow the duffel to turn into a backpack!

      Must have!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This bag has so many uses. Ive used for so many things from international travel, overnighters, car camping and even carrying climbing gear. this bag is durable and gets the job done.

      LOVE IT!!!!

Durable and I love how it's waterproof and versatile, so sturdy I imagine I will be using this for years to come. Works well for long trips and just spending the night at a friends house. I also use it to put all my ski stuff in when I have yo take the bus.

        Perfect Travel Bag

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love the super durable and material! And the zips don't show any stress even when the bag is packed to the brim! It's super spacious, the straps are comfy

This is an investment in a bag you'll probably have forever! I also purchased the larger rolling duffel and it's a great next step up!

        Stands up to rough treatment

        • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Gave this as a gift to a mountaineering buddy who is often packing his bag to go climb or head out on other outdoor trips. He is usually pretty rough on his bags, and says this one is doing a good job holding up to the rough treatment he puts it through.

        Unanswered Question

Has anyone taken this on Ryanair? I know the demensions are slightly bigger then the carry on limit, but if you pack light can you make it fit?

This DRW coating is not explained. Please elaborate.
Is this duffel waterproof? Can it be made waterproof? If so what to use for waterproofing?

Hi , has anyone taken this bag as carry on luggage in a plane? Do you know if it's too big? Many thanks!

        Unanswered Question

What are the interior colors and how dark/light is it for the interior of all the duffle colors available including classic red? I'm looking for interior colors that are light so it is easier to find things. I don't want to be lost in a "black hole"!

        Unanswered Question

Can a single shoulder strap be purchased separately? Or can the backpack strap be utilized as a shoulder strap?

Does this bag have the traditional single over the shoulder strap or just the backpack style straps?

i had the same question and eventually figured out that the bottom end of the backpack strap (opposite the clipped end) slides diagonally through the plastic part attached to the bag. Hope that makes sense

        Is the 60L carry-on size?

        Agnes,

Most US carry-on restrictions are in the neighborhood of 22" x 14" x 9" -- the 60L Black Hole is ~25" x 13" x 10". I've used it as a carry-on five or six times, but not fully packed. If it were 100% full, packed to the gills, you might not get away with it, but for the most part, I'd say yes, it'll work fine as a carry-on.

Let me know if you have any other questions-- I'd be happy to help! I can be reached via email at [email protected] or 801.736.6399.

I packed mine to the gills, and though it was about 2.5 inches over the total restriction for American Airlines, no one said a word to me about it, maybe because I had it on my back, and most backpacks are well within guidelines. So for me, this was awesome as a carry on, and I loved getting to use it as a "backpack". But beware that different airlines have different restrictions and also have an up-charge if you claim it as a checked bag AT the airport (rather than doing it online beforehand). But some airlines also let things slide. Worst case scenario, they may tell you it's too big at the gate--just take a couple things out of it and squeeze it down to make it fit in their little size-tester-thingamajigs (something you can't do with a boxy suitcase)--it can surely take the rough handling! :) Good luck!!!

Wondering why they went to 900d from the previous version that is 1200d and how that is heavier duty than the previous version.

Hello uraudi, what a good question. The previous model was made with 14.7-oz. 1,200-denier 100% polyester, whereas the new model is made with 15-oz. 900-denier 100% polyester ripstop. The fabric's weight does affect abrasion resistance, so the newer model is made with "ripstop" polyester, whereas the previous model--though coming in at 1200d--is not listed as ripstop (ripstop refers to the weaving of fibers into the fabric into a diamond or square shape that, when punctured or torn, are better able to stop the tear from growing). You can actually see the difference in the fabric, with the one the right being the new, 900d polyester ripstop (see the characteristic ripstop squares?) with the one on the left being the older model. So, the bottom line is the integrity might be even better in the new model, despite the difference in denier.

        I hope that helps!

What are the differences between this and the previous version other than a $10 difference. It also looks like the external attachment points are shifted a bit. Anything else?

great question. The Black Hole bags were fully redesigned for this season.

        Here are the updates:

        New more durable fabric.

Updated pack strap interface - more secure and easier to take on and off

        Internal compression straps

The entire bag self stuffs into the front pocket

(we should have a video available soon detailing all of the updates as well)
